Welcome to the Punta Mita Fishing Report for September 2023! While the weather may be humid and tropical but we will show you why you should fish in Mexico this month. The first factor is this is the slowest month for tourism. Fewer people on the fishing grounds means more hookups for you and the crew. The best factor is there are discounts on hotels, food and yes even fishing trips. This month’s update shares some of the exciting catches we had last month and what we will be catching this month. The impressive marlin, sailfish, and mahi-mahi have gracefully entered our fishing grounds. The weather conditions have been nothing short of perfection, with a few offshore storms passing by and the late evening rains. What many aren’t aware of is that September shines as one of the prime fishing months in Punta Mita, Mexico.
Why, you ask? Firstly, the clientele diminishes as schools resume in both the United States and Mexico, allowing for a quieter fishing experience. Secondly, our bay and offshore fishing areas teem with increased bait presence. In the pages of my fishing reports, you’ll consistently find me emphasizing the importance of following the bait trail. Where the bait goes, the fish follow. Another pivotal factor is the continuation of those long summer days. In September, the sun graces us at 6:30 AM and sets around 7:30 PM, providing ample daylight hours for pursuing all sorts of fish and any fishing adventure you can imagine. Dorado, sailfish, marlin, tuna—the roster of game fish available for capture in the Bay of Punta Mita during September is remarkable. So, let’s dive into our fishing whereabouts for this splendid month.
Our bay fishing adventures encompass the region from Nuevo Vallarta down to the southern stretch of the bay. Along this southward course, the anglers can try their luck at Los Arcos, Quimixto, Los Amimas, and Yelpa. While you’re equipped for the various bay species, don’t be surprised if billfish sneakily come into our fishing spread. It’s a common occurrence, so keep an attentive eye on the short corner. The marlin and sailfish have a penchant for surprising us, often taking a liking to a black Bart lure or even a skillfully rigged mullet bait.
A fishing fact not known to many anglers: sailfish seem to favor the southern bayside during full moons. There’s a split among fishermen—some favor the full moon, while others don’t. As for me, I maintain a neutral stance on this matter, having witnessed both incredible fishing days and those that didn’t shine so brightly. Turning our attention to the north side of the bay, it’s a haven for yellowtail (sometimes in schools), Spanish mackerel, skipjack tuna, mahi-mahi, and even some roosterfish. On certain days, we fish the Nuevo Vallarta area and the La Cruz area. This stretch boasts several cherished fishing spots along its coastline. Pala Verde stands as a standout, offering a thrilling uncertainty about the species that might bite around this underwater pinnacle. From snapper to sailfish, September has been known to grace us with various catches in this scenic shoreline zone. As you traverse this part of the bay, make sure to carry extra bait—you might just witness schools of fish gathering for their September rendezvous. This September, our schedule is brimming with offshore ventures around Labor Day. The spotlight is on various offshore hotspots, including El Morro. Situated just beyond the bay’s periphery, El Morro is celebrated for its proximity to Punya Mita and its allure to sailfish, marlin, and mahi-mahi. This escapade, a mere offshore jaunt, can be conquered within an 8-hour span. Thanks to abundant bait and thriving reefs, roosterfish and amberjack revel in this angler’s paradise. Notably, I’ve reeled in substantial marlin here during September. For a productive fishing trip, try small tuna or substantial bonitas weighing between 5 to 10 pounds.
For those with an adventurous spirit, the Corbetena and Banco await offshore enthusiasts. These journeys, spanning 10 to 14 hours, promise thrilling encounters. The Corbetena, the first on this roster, guarantees a year-round presence of marlin and tuna. Bait aplenty attracts these pelagic fish in droves, with their appearances determined by water temperature and clarity.
